What would you do if you weren’t afraid? I first saw this quote years ago when I read Who Moved my Cheese? by Spencer Johnson 20 years ago soon after I had graduated from college. This book is a quick read that changed my life and this quote has stuck with me ever since.
This concept does not mean the absence of fear just how you should respond in the midst of it. Many times it is easy to let fear dictate how we respond to situations.
I sometimes repeat this saying in my mind before a big presentation or meeting. This concept has given me the courage to speak up in meetings, make decisions that no one else was willing to and invest in rental real estate with all cash during the Great Recession.
When I purchased my first rental property it was in 2008 during the height of the Great Recession. I knew the property was a great deal but it backed up to a trailer mobile home park and I was in an unstable job. I knew the house was a good deal and I was confident that I would be able to rent it out at a good price. So I moved forward and purchased the property in spite of my fear.
Now 10 years later and I can look back and say that was a great decision! The house has more than doubled in value and has rarely been vacant supplying me with a nice reliable cash flow for over a decade. I had fear and wondered if I was making a mistake but I pushed forward any way.
As you think about your next move in life ask yourself what would you do if you were not afraid? So go ahead start that business you have been thinking about for your years, ask that person out, face that fear that has been holding you back! You might surprise yourself with what you are capable of doing.
Good luck – You got this!
