The best advice I ever got was from my parents who taught me at a very young age to live below my means.  My parents were consistent savers so saving money was a way of life for me as long as I can remember.  My parents took it to the extreme sometimes and were super cheap.  On special occasions we would go to Burger King on Sundays because they would have $.99 cents Whoppers.  We would get the burgers but then come home and make our own fries or have chips! I have carried this “frugalness” into adulthood and have always tried to be prudent with my finances.  My Dad told me to save my raises whenever I got them at work.  This helped me avoid lifestyle inflation which I’ve seen from so many of my coworkers over the years. When I was working my first job out of business…

Back in the early 2000’s around 03’or ’04 I decided to set aside some money each month and invest it in a Vanguard S&P 500 brokerage account.  I just put in on auto-pilot so that each month the funds would automatically be deposited in the account. I think I started about $100 per month.  I kept doing it and and now fast forward to 2019 and this account now has a decent balance of over $135K. Over the years I slowly increased the amount I was depositing.  The moral of this story is that I was my own best friend. At the time I was looking out for my future self!  As I look back now 15 years or so I just want to thank myself! This doesn’t mean that your shouldn’t have Friends or isolate yourself.  It just means that you should look for ways to more self-reliant and…

I’ve tried countless supplements and over the counter remedies in my quest to naturally relieve my anxiety and stress.  Some have worked and some have had no effect so it was with mild trepidation that I decided to try Joy-Filled.  This supplement is comprised of a proprietary blend of Rhodila Rosea St. John’s Wort Lemon Balm Ginkgo Biloba Ashwagandha Gotu Kola Eleuthero For a week I would take 2 supplements in the morning on an empty stomach with a glass of water with organic apple cider vinegar. After about 30-45 minutes I can feel the Joy-Filled supplements starting to take effect.  It gives me this overall positive feeling and general sense of well being.  The great thing is that this feeling lasts for several hours. I’ve aced job interviews and 2 presentations in front of crowds of hundreds of people while taking this supplement. When I took the stage…

I am 44 and I’ve already had 3 colonoscopies. I’ve had the test done every 5 years since I was in my early 30’s. My dad died from stage iv colon cancer that spread to his liver and lungs. After watching him die from this awful disease over the course of 4.5 years I wanted to give myself the best chance I could to avoid this same fate. Don’t get me wrong the prep is unpleasant and the test can feel a bit embarrassing but trust me it is way better than the alternative (death). Colonoscopy Prep The prep is no fun. The day before your procedure you will be on a liquid diet. Here is a list of some of the stuff you can “eat” Chicken, beef, and vegetable broth. But no noodles or anything solid. Just the liquid. Jello – but make sure you avoid red or blue.…

If you feel like giving up…don’t! No one said this life would be easy.  I know…I have to remind myself this everyday.  Take this blog for example. I’ve been working on it it for over four years and guess what?  Some days I don’t get any visits. On a good day I will get 10 visits or so. But taking my own advice I refuse to give up. I enjoy writing, and this blog is an outlet that let’s me improve my writing skills. I also hope that in some small way that I am able to help just one person that finds them self here.  Sure, it would be great if I was one of those bloggers that could support themselves from all the money their site is pulling in.  But that’s not my reality. So if you think about giving up, just think about working on a site…

Just relax, chill out, take it easy.  If you are dealing with anxiety then you know this is easier said than done. But learning to relax and find balance is critical to your happiness and overall long term health. If you’ve been reading my blog for some time then you know how much I hate my current job.  This can make it hard or dang near impossible for me to relax.  And if I’m not careful the stress and anxiety from my current job situation  can seep in to all aspects of my life. Especially during the weekend. As a side note I am focused on getting out of this situation with my ultimate goal being to exit the corporate rat race all together. This is always top of mind for me and helps drive my long term financial thinking.  As I continue to deal with my crazy work situation…

My wife’s 2005 Acura MDX recently failed inspection and needed a minimum of $2800 in repairs to “maybe” pass (no guarantees).  After over 200,00 miles and a recent slew of repairs needed it is finally time to get a new car.  But I should be clear, I mean new to me..not new.  I’ve never purchased a new car and never will! When you are researching cars online and going to the dealership and seeing all the nice, fancy cars it is easy to forget one important thing.  A car is a depreciating asset.  Unless you are buying a classic car or exotic sports car as soon as you drive it off the lot it will lose around 10 percent in the first month. Afterwards it will lose 15 to 20 percent of it’s value every year. So my rule of thumb is simple.  I buy a used car that is a…

For as long as I can remember I have dreaded going to the doctor.  I’m not sure when it started but if I had to guess it has to do with the fact that my Mom was sick most of my childhood.  She had Multiple Sclerosis and I watched it destroy her body over the course of almost three decades.  Sometimes it felt like she lived at the doctor’s office and the sad thing was they could do very little to improve her quality of life. My fear of going to the doctor is so bad that when I get my blood pressure taken it usually skyrockets into the high blood  pressure zone.  I eventually was diagnosed with “white-coat hypertension” after being monitored for weeks and taking my blood pressure at home daily. White coat sucks because the fear seems to feed on itself.  Every time I felt the blood…

Cardiovascular fitness is essential to a healthy life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults get a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercises weekly. When you do regular cardio your blood pressure decreases as does your resting heart rate.  This means your heart doesn’t have to work as hard to keep you alive which is a very good thing!  It also improves blood flow to your brain which help with memory and thinking and it also decreases the risk of erectile dysfunction in men and leads to enhanced arousal for women. Cardio also improves your circulation for healthier, clearer skin and helps control blood sugar.  With all these benefits there is no excuse not to have a regular cardio exercise routine. If you are busy with a family, career, or other distractions in life it can sometimes be hard to find the time to exercise. …

If you are stressed out then you know how hard it can be to get a good nights sleep.  You probably toss and turn throughout the night worrying and feeling anxious trying to quiet your mind.  The slightest noise can keep you up for hours. If you’re an adult the National Sleep Foundation recommends 7-9 hours a night. Sleeping less than seven hours per day puts you at an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and frequent mental distress.  Need any more convincing? Sleep is critical to your overall health so you must make it a priority.  Here are some tips to get more sleep. Exercise every day Don’t bring your phone or tablet to bed Avoid alcohol and caffeine several hours before bed Make sure your bedroom is cool and comfortable Avoid distractions and keep your bedroom quiet Until recently I really struggled with…
