When I am feeling stressed out one of my favorite things to do is to go on a long bike ride.  I will go for a 10-15 mile bike ride while I listen to a good audio book, podcast or music while I just lose myself.  I make sure to keep the volume down so I can hear cars!

There is something about getting out on the open road with clear skies and the sun beating down on your back that can melt your stress and anxiety away.  It’s really hard to stay in a state of high anxiety while you are climbing a hill or taking in the scenery.  I live in the southern region of the United States so it can get really hot.  I’m talking over 100 degrees but I don’t let that stop me.  I just make sure I stay well hydrated with one of those nifty hydration backpacks.  I actually like going on a ride when it is hot like this.  Something about sweating that really burns off the stress!

I’ve tried many different bikes over the years but my favorite type of bike is the fitness bike.  They are light with an upright handlebar which make them comfortable for long distances especially if you are not wanted to hunch over like a professional cyclist.  They are not as fast or light as road bikes but they are much more durable especially if you will be riding around in neighborhoods that may have uneven pavement or if you will be jumping off curbs.  When I was on a road bike I had to call my wife a few times to come get me after the wheel frame bent or the tire popped after I jumped off a curb. You can also try a hybrid bike which is similar to a fitness bike.  I highly recommend going to your local bike shop and test driving a few to see which one you will be comfortable with.

Studies have shown that vigorous exercise can help with anxiety and depression.  In a University of Southern Mississippi study participants that exercised intensely for three 20 minute sessions weekly experienced a significant decrease in anxiety after just two workouts.

If you decide to give bike riding a try make sure you wear a helmet.  You should also get a good holder for your phone and make sure to get a water bottle holder.  I also wear gloves in case I fall so I don’t skin up my hands!

Happy trails!
