In life you are either in a storm, going into a storm or coming out of a storm. If you remember this it will help give you some perspective during the tough times. Speaking from my own experience, some days my anxiety has been worse than usual on some days as I continue to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
At times the challenges in my life can feel overwhelming and I feel extremely isolated. If you feel this way at times it can help to take a step back and assess your situation. This has really helped me. I’ve found that it’s really easy to lose perspective when you’re at home all day and the challenges at work can seem all compassing. Add in kids running around or an unhappy spouse and these have been trying times to say the least! Here are some tips that have helped me deal with anxiety and will hopefully help you too!
Get some exercise
It’s important to stay healthy and to get outside. Before my day starts I take my dog for a walk and listen to some relaxing music or my favorite podcast. It’s amazing how a quick walk and feeling the sunshine on your skin can make you feel so much better.
Take your anxiety medication
If you are on meds make sure you remember to take them. I’m taking Lexapro and some days I’ve forgotten to take it. Big mistake. So i you take meds take them.
Talk to your friends
Being isolated can make your depression and anxiety so much worse. Talk to a friend. I recently had a zoom call with some of my old coworkers and it was so great to catch up and talk about old times. Even having just a 5 minute conversation with someone you care about will work wonders for your soul!
Treat yourself
Give yourself something to look forward to after a long day. Watch your favorite show on Netflix. Play a video game. Whatever it is for you make sure you do something that brings you joy!
Remember that you are not alone
We are all going through this together. Also if you believe in a higher power don’t forget to pray. This has helped me immensely especially when my anxiety is especially crushing.
Limit consuming the news
The news is terrible these days. Limit yourself to media reports as much as possible. I don’t watch more than 5 minutes a day and sometimes that feels like 5 minutes too many.
Give yourself something to look forward to
It’s so important to have something in your life that brings you pleasure and something to look forward too. I personally really struggle with this. Plan a future vacation or road trip. Whatever it is for you that will give you something to look forward to in the future.
Get some sleep
Try your best to get a good night’s sleep. When I feel stressed and anxiety and don’t have any energy and it can really throw off my sleep schedule. Try to get some rest. Your body will thank you for it.
Go easy on yourself
Remember it okay to feel the way you are feeling. If you feel overwhelmed and need help get it. You are worth it!
