It goes without saying that COVID-19 has impacted our daily lives. These are unprecedented times and this global pandemic has affected everyone. Over a million people have tested positive with the coronavirus and millions more have become unemployed.
During these uncertain times it is easy to feel overwhelmed, stressed and filled with fear and anxiety. Everyone reacts differently to stress but here are some tips to help you through these difficult times.
Don’t Fixate on the News
Turning on the TV to watch news these days can be a dangerous and depressing thing. Every time you flip to the news the number of sick and dead is all over the screen. It’s easy to fixate on these stats and depressing news and let it permeate your soul. Instead just watch a few minutes of news to stay current and then watch something else, or read a book, or go for a walk. Your aren’t going to do yourself any favors by watching depressing news story after depressing news story.
Get Dressed For Work
If you are working first be thankful you have a job. I know that can be tough to appreciate especially if you hate your job but in this environment where some are predicting 20% unemployment be glad that you are still collecting a paycheck.
Routine can be your best friend in times like this. Still wake up and take a shower and get dressed like you are going to the office. There is something about getting dressed for work that puts you in the right place mentally even if you are just sitting at the dining room table with your laptop.
Exercise
In trying times like these it’s important to stay healthy and a fitness regime should be a priority for you. You don’t need fancy equipment. It’s crazy the workout you can get with a few resistance bands, a kettle bell and a jump rope! Try to get some exercise in every day. You won’t regret it.
Give Yourself a Break
It’s important to give yourself a break from all the depressing news. Do something you enjoy to take your mind off things. Play a video game, binge watch some of your favorite shows on Netflix. Whatever it takes. The other day I watched Star Wars Episode IV and completely forgot about the coronavirus for about 2 hours. It was wonderful!
Take it Day by Day
Don’t try to think about the fact that you may have to social distance for the next month or so. Just take it day by day. Try to enjoy the little things. I have 2 young kids and while it can be a challenge to keep them quite during work calls, I’ve also had an opportunity to spend more time with them than I ever have. It’s been nice getting to know my kids much better!
Don’t Self-Medicate
Try to limit drinking alcohol to deal with anxiety. In the long run it will just make you feels worse and you might develop a drinking problem. I’m glad to say that I haven’t had a drink in almost 18 months!
